Wedding Dance FAQs

What should our dance look like?

We think that your first dance as a married couple should reflect your relationship. Whether it’s sweet and simple or fast paced and thrilling, your wedding guests should say, “that is so them!”. It’s best to start by picking a song which you both like. Then we can get to work on choreographing a dance with your influence as the lessons progress. Have you seen something you liked? We can probably do that too!

When should we start?

In a perfect world, it is best to start as early as you can. We’ve had couples come in almost every week for year to put together the performance of a lifetime. You can also start some lessons now, practice at home, then pick it up again just before the big day.

However, we understand that time gets away from us so we can design your dance based on how many weeks you’ve got left, whether you have 2 weeks or 20 weeks.

How do we get started?

Book your first lesson here and we will match you with an instructor with the same availability. From there, tell us which song you’ve picked (or we can help you select one!) and our instructors will get to work designing your dance. We’ve prepared these guides for making the most out of your lessons. Click here.

Classes for our friends and family?

We’d be happy to provide lessons for your friends and family, either with you, or in a separate lesson. We also offer public classes during the week that anyone can attend to pick up a few moves. Learn more here.

How do we pick the right song?

We often get asked ‘can you recommend a song for our wedding dance?’. We don’t like to pick the song for you because it is your dance and it should be about you but we can give you the following tips to help you pick a wedding dance song:

  • The song should mean something to you both (like it reminds you of an event in your relationship, the lyrics resonate with you both, or it just makes you both want to dance!). This is the most important thing to consider. If you still can’t decide - think about the following:

  • Remember the audience who might be watching your dance - it’s about you but also your wedding guests should enjoy the song too. If there will be young children or elderly family members at the wedding , that may factor into your song choice.

  • Think about the theme or ‘vibe’ of your wedding. How will the song fit into that theme?

  • The song should have a clear rhythm and be easy to hear the beat. The clearer the beat, the easier the song will be to dance to.

  • Consider where else you might hear the song and if that will impact your decision (ie does it play often on a TV ad, or have you heard it at someone else’s wedding?).

  • Does the song have a good structure? For example - a long slow intro might mean a bit of waiting around, as opposed to a song that gets into the lyrics straightaway, or a song that has a great peak or highlight within the first 2-3 minutes meaning you can end the dance at the right time.

Remember, the most important thing is that we can choreograph a wedding dance to any piece of music, so your first consideration should be a song that means something to your relationship.

Do you cater to same-sex couples?

Yes! Ballroom Baby Geelong is proud to be an ally of LGBT+ community and run by LGBT+ people. We have helped many couples shape their unique wedding dance and would be honoured to help you too.
